Celebrating Hijab
It was a cool and breezy Friday evening on the 25th of May as 420 Muslim women of Sydney ascended the sweeping staircase of the Grand Ballroom at the Emporium Function Centre in a graceful and punctual manner to participate in a ‘Celebration of the Hijab’.
This was a much anticipated event considering it was sold out 3 weeks in advance with a very loooong wait list, and the night certainly delivered beyond our greatest expectations…….
In the lead up to the event a survey on Hijab was prepared and distributed throughout the community to gauge the degree of knowledge that existed on the requirements of Hijab and the Muslim woman’s experience of wearing it in Australia.
Alhamdulilah the response was amazing.
So many women described so beautifully their attachment to the Hijab and desire to please Allah in an act of worship which encompasses their clothing and conduct. It is this survey which provided the platform from which the’ Celebrate Hijab’ event was prepared.
The sisters from the Events Team at Daar Aisha Shariah College, as well as Sisters Eisha Saleh and Kath Fry from the famed Baraka Designs and the talented Safa Dalati laboured tirelessly to put together an event that would inform and inspire women.
An event that would emphasize the Hijab as a means by which Allah honours women, and where the Islamic guidelines for Hijab could be portrayed and applied in a variety of contexts.
In order to deliver the message clearly and powerfully a series of mini events were slotted into the program.
From the first drum beat to the last tap of a shoe on the specially constructed catwalk the audience was enthralled. We were mesmerized, our eyes fixed upon the stage not wanting to miss a moment of the speech delivered by Um Abdurrahman or the beautiful lyrics sung by young Stephanie Kurlow.
From the flowing garments of the fashion parade to the hilarious, groundbreaking plays we did not miss a moment, we absorbed it all and LOVED it all.
Women emerged from the hall deeply touched by the memorable evening intent on stepping forward in their path to Allah by improving their Hijab.
AlhamdulilAllah and with the Tawfique of Allah 16 women made the greatest change of all by actually wearing the Hijab for the first time in their lives and committed to it as a direct result of the Celebrate Hijab Event.
They desire the pleasure of Allah, may He grant it to them and to all who seek it.
With gifts provided by Divinity Collection and adorable cupcakes dressed in hijab and in niqab made by Fadwa Shaker the guests emerged into the night farewelled by the sweet sounds of Nasheed played by DJ Susan Shaker.
The highlight of this event was by far being in the presence of a dazzling sea of sisterhood, an array of confident, capable, connected to Allah Muslim sisters with the one aim of finding ways to improve themselves seeking Allah’s pleasure.
It was an absolute pleasure to be in your company.
See you next time inshallah!!
